Sustainable Schools Initiative was initiated by the Agency in 2009, with a main objective to 'capacity-build School Communities to address their own Environmental Impact and roll out a Sustained Environment Education and Awareness Activity for the Whole School Community'. The Agency has always believed that, Education is vital to achieving sustainability and has always invested a great deal of efforts at educating all the relevant target audiences towards a sustainable future. Sustainable Schools Initiative is a standing testimony to the efforts invested by the Agency.
The Agency as well as the Government of Abu Dhabi is proud of the achievements from all the Sustainable schools. In these past 4 years according to reports received from the schools, 120 schools and 3200 students audited their school's resource use through Green audits. Together they have helped reduce 23% of school's waste and 54 % its water use in addition to encouraging more students to travel by school bus. Sustainable Schools have reached out to the community be it the farmer, fishermen, retail sector or families and have motivated them to adapt green practices.
The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is coming to a close. The world will be meeting at the end of this year to assess the achievements and efforts taken by all during the decade and decide on the future course of action. We now need to take stock of our own achievements and identify any gaps that we may have. When it comes to 'Educating for Sustainability', educators are the main stakeholders; it is they who need to identify their successes and map out their path for the future.
During the launch of the phase 2 of the Sustainable Schools Initiative, The Agency had promised all the educators that, it would connect them with the World's best experts on 'Educating for Sustainability'. This One day Networking Forum has been organized especially for the Sustainable School Educators and to all those committed educators from other organizations and institutions who have been struggling hard for spreading environmental awareness and protection. You are not alone! Attending and participating in this forum would convey that Educators from all over the world are in the same boat. The Planet is changing; climate change is now a hard fact. This means all of us have to adapt to these changes. The onus of equipping the future generation with skills and capabilities to confront a very uncertain future lies with the educators.
This One Day Networking Forum on 'Educating for Sustainability' has been organized with the following objectives
